ERPNext and Odoo are the two open source ERPs most often shortlisted by Indian SMEs. Both are written in Python, both began as community projects, and both now have commercial companies behind them. Read only the feature lists and you will see two similar products; read the licences and pricing pages and you will see two different propositions.
Thirvusoft implements ERPNext from Coimbatore, so this page is written from that side of the fence. We have kept it to verifiable differences and left out price figures, which depend on edition, app count and hosting and change over time.
Community and Enterprise: how the editions differ
Odoo is published in two editions. The Community edition is free and open source and carries a core set of applications. The Enterprise edition is a paid product, priced per user, that adds further applications and Odoo Studio, its point-and-click customisation tool. The two editions differ in application coverage, so check whether the apps you need, accounting in particular, are in the edition you plan to use.
ERPNext has one edition. The full product, including manufacturing, accounting, stock, CRM, sales, purchase, projects, assets and support, is released under GPLv3. In version 15, HR and payroll (Frappe HR), education, healthcare, agriculture and loan management are separate free apps installed alongside ERPNext, but there is no paid tier that unlocks functionality.
App-based pricing versus one product
Odoo Enterprise is priced per user, and its functionality is packaged as apps that you add as you need them. That model rewards keeping user counts low: a company that wants storekeepers, machine operators and delivery staff logging transactions should do the arithmetic before signing.
ERPNext has no licence fee and no per-user fee. Cost is made up of implementation, customisation, hosting and support, and an SME project with Thirvusoft typically starts within a few lakh rupees. Because adding a user costs nothing beyond training, customers tend to put more people on the system, which is what makes stock and shop-floor data trustworthy.

Indian GST, e-invoicing and e-way bills
For an Indian company, GST support decides whether an ERP is usable, not just installable. ERPNext handles this through the India Compliance app, which produces GST invoices, e-invoices with IRN and QR code, e-way bills, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data, HSN summaries and TDS entries. Thirvusoft configures it for every client and links it to their GSTINs, branches and item HSN codes.
Odoo also ships an Indian localisation, and Indian partners have built extensions around it. Before you commit, ask the partner to demonstrate the full monthly cycle in the edition you are buying: e-invoice generation and cancellation, an e-way bill for a stock transfer between branches, and a GSTR-1 export in the format your accountant uploads. The demonstration matters more than the tick in the feature list.
Customisation: Frappe Framework versus Odoo Studio and modules
Odoo customisation runs on two tracks. Odoo Studio, in the Enterprise edition, lets an administrator add fields, adjust views and build simple automations without code. Deeper changes are written as Odoo modules in Python by a developer.
ERPNext is built on the Frappe Framework, where every screen is a DocType defined in metadata. Custom fields, property changes, client scripts and server scripts are added from the browser without touching core code; anything larger is packaged as a custom Frappe app in Python and JavaScript. Thirvusoft's products for tyre service, pavers manufacturing, event management and distribution are built this way, kept in version control and re-tested on a staging site before each upgrade.
Community, partners and who maintains the code
Odoo is maintained by Odoo S.A. in Belgium and has a large global partner network, including many firms in India, plus a community association that maintains additional modules. For a buyer that means plenty of choice of partners and plenty of modules to evaluate for quality and upkeep.
ERPNext is maintained by Frappe Technologies in Mumbai and is used by thousands of companies worldwide. The partner network is smaller but concentrated in India, which for an Indian buyer is useful: the people who write the code and the people who file GST returns share a time zone and a legal system. Hosting: your server, Indian cloud or vendor cloud
Odoo Community can be self-hosted anywhere; Odoo Enterprise adds the vendor's own hosting options. ERPNext can be hosted on any Indian cloud provider or on a server in your own office. Thirvusoft normally recommends cloud hosting in India for backups, uptime and remote access, and sets up on-premise installations where policy requires data to stay inside the building.

Decision guide: which one for your business?
Choose Odoo if your team already knows it, if you want the broadest app catalogue inside one vendor's ecosystem, or if a particular Enterprise application, such as its website builder or point of sale, is the reason you are buying an ERP at all. For a company that values vendor-managed hosting and upgrades, the Enterprise package is coherent.
Choose ERPNext if you want the core modules without an edition decision, if you expect many users, if GST compliance maintained in India matters to you, or if you know you will customise heavily and want those customisations in an app you own. It is a good fit for Tamil Nadu manufacturers, distributors, rice mills and paver-block makers, all of which Thirvusoft has implemented.
